Russian for foreigners
Educacentre, one of the biggest language schools in St.Petersburg, opened its only subsidiary, in Pushkin, in Autumn 1998.
For nearly 4 years this branch has developed into a small but very rofessional and well-known school to the south of St. Petersburg and it serves mainly students from the suburbs of Saint-Petersburg - Pushkin, Pavlovsk, and Kolpino.
Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo) is a quiet but fascinating town 25 km from St. Petersburg that is famous for its beautiful Palaces and parks that were created in the 18th and 19th centuries. They rank among the world's finest specimens of landscape architecture. In the course of two centuries Tsarskoye Selo has been used as a summer residence by many of the Tsars of Russia.
On three separate places, covering a general area of about 1482.6 acres, more than one hundred buildings, from majestic palaces and historical monuments to pavilions and small bridges, can be seen.
Educacentre in Pushkin is located near the Catherine Park in the mansion of Duke V. P. Kochubei - Chief Master of ceremonies at the last Russian Imperial Court. Its superb interiors, which have survived surprisingly intact, create an inimitable atmosphere of the beginning of the 20th century.
Mission Statement
External: to help people overcome the psycholinguistic barriers which inevitably arise from the study of foreign languages. To promote an increase in the cultural and educational level of Russians, and their integration into international social and economic spheres.
Internal: the creation of optimum conditions for personal and professional growth, the realisation of the creative potential of employees of the company.
Profile
The school mostly specializes in teaching English to Russian students, adults and schoolchildren. In small groups Educacentre students study the language according to the classical multi-level British system.
In the main, Russian teachers work with students who are at the beginner stage. From Intermediate level and upwards, professional native English speaking teachers are always involved.
Every summer, a special 6-week intensive programme takes place. Besides studying, students may attend a drama society, play tennis, ride horses, and take organized weekend trips during this period.
In collaboration with the Management Training Centre, Educacentre Pushkin also organizes intensive immersion courses in Business English. The programme is highly flexible and orientated towards a very wide range of fields in which the students and their companies are active. For periods varying from 5 to 12 days, students from different companies from St. Petersburg, various regions of Russia, and even from abroad, arrive at the mansion and stay at the in-house hotel. The Management Training Centre, which occupies the main part of the building, also has a restaurant, banquet & concert halls, a conference theatre, a night bar, a sauna, and both winter and summer gardens.
Russian for foreigners is taught in Pushkin as part of the Educacentre St Petersburg courses that take place in the city.
The staff of the school now consists of 20 teachers (amongst which there are 2 Native English speaking teachers), the Principal (Director), British DOS, 2 Russian Academic coordinators, Foreign Studies Dept manager and 2 office managers.
The school is constantly on the lookout for experienced teachers, both Russian and non-Russian. The school offers flexible working conditions and accommodation.
Foreign Studies. English abroad: As well as offering general and business English programmes for companies and residents of St Petersburg (particularly the southern suburbs), the school opened an International Department in order to provide the students with more opportunities to master their language and professional skills, and to widen the borders of educational services.
As we teach students of different ages from 4 to 60 we propose to have requirements from all the age groups concerning further foreign studies including professional and higher educational programmes. We have approximately 100 school pupils learning English in our centre, and some of their parents have expressed an interest in summer programmes in the UK, and other countries. Older students are interested in special courses, intensive or specifically designed to meet their particular needs. Others prefer to take more entertainment-based trips to Malta, Spain and Australia. Many of our executive students are
Learning Russian – а piece of cake!
Some people say that the Russian language can be hard to learn. This is not really true, learning Russian is no harder than learning other languages.
In fact, there are many things that make Russian easier to learn than other languages. The key is to use these things to your advantage. Here are some things that make Russian easier:
1. Once you have learned the alphabet, you can pronounce almost all words quite accurately. With Russian the pronunciation is normally quite clear from the written form of the word.
2. Russian does not use complicated sentence structures like English. You can normally say exactly what you want with just a few words.
3. Russian uses the case system. Instead of following a strict sentence word order like in English, you just need to change the ends of the nouns. This makes Russian a very expressive language, because you can emphasise a point by changing the order of the words in a sentence. It also helps you understand what people are trying to say.
4. Russian does not use articles.
5. Russian has fewer tenses than English.
